Haiti

Haiti. What do you think of when you hear the word "Haiti"? Maybe, earthquake, poverty, help, sad, hopeless, struggling, cholera, voudou, malaria? Growing up the way we were taught to remember the difference between the Dominican Republic and Haiti was "Hate Haiti". How sad is it that we teach children about hatred and put a stigma on a people and country that we know nothing about. But Haiti is not equivalent to Hate. It is just the opposite, though the government at times has been very trying the people and the culture are far from being full of hate, but rather joy.  When I hear the world Haiti, the words that come to mind are beautiful, rich culture, determination, hope, loving people, inspiring, eager children, patriotism.

My love for Haiti, began about fifteen minutes from getting off the plane. I was mesmerized by the people and the culture. The sights, the smells, the sounds, everything about that day will remain in my heart. Haiti is a place that the world sees as hopeless, and in need of their help. When really Haitians would be doing a lot better if we let them be them. They love their country more than anything, and want to see it be something. The people are the most beautiful I have every seen, and their hearts shine even brighter. The culture is one that is almost the exact opposite of America, and yet I feel more comfortable there. The face of a child feeling loved, there is nothing in this world that can top it. Haiti is where my heart is and will always be.
